BACK ON TRACK: THE POST INDULGENCE PLAN

Lifestyle |

Overdone it? We’ve got you covered.

La Roca Village

Over-indulgence, gluttony, greed – we just can’t help ourselves when it comes to the holidays. Blame social media, social conditioning or just the inherent human need to want to be sociable, but as soon as those Christmas tree lights go up and the first bottle of Prosecco pops, you might as well kiss goodbye to any good intentions until January. Don’t fret though, you can’t undo the past but you can look forward. Here’s how to right all those wrongs and get back to living your best life... until next year.

Set realistic goals

The start of a new year always feels optimistic and free. You bring forward the good parts of the year just passed and you forget about the relationships that failed, embarrassing office parties and all the things you spent too much money on. The slate is clean and it’s up to you how you rewrite it. Give fate a helping hand by visualising where you want to be in the next few months and be realistic. Maybe this is a goal in itself, maybe it’s spending less time on your phone, actually finishing that book you’ve had on your nightstand for the last few weeks or making lunch three times a week. Start small and the bigger picture will slowly come to fruition.

Establish a self-care ritual

It’s tempting to whip yourself back into shape as soon as New Year’s Day is over, but trust us, making major changes to your diet and lifestyle overnight rarely ends well. Rather than going to the extreme, take January to turn things down a notch. The holidays are a time for giving – presents, energy and effort – to others, so now indulge in a little you time. Treat yourself to a luxurious bath oil or salts and build your beauty cabinet with a nourishing sheet mask, essential oils and a few sticks of palo santo for burning. Turn the lights off, pour yourself a glass of wine and leave your phone on silent and as far away as possible.

Refresh your wardrobe

The new year is ripe for reinvention and with all the January sales going on, what better time than now to rework your style and refresh your wardrobe? We’re not saying you have to go from Alexa Chung to Meghan Markle, but if there’s a look you’ve been dying to try, now’s the time to do it. Make a Pinterest board of your style inspiration and use this to guide your shopping over the next few weeks. Our advice? Steer clear of anything overtly trendy and instead look for timeless pieces with individual edge.

Restore your body and mind

The effects of the holidays might be physically visible but what about your mental state? Because we can’t see emotional exhaustion or strife, it’s easy to sweep it under the carpet and pledge to deal with it later. Deal with it now and you’ll set yourself up for the rest of the year, let it simmer and you’ll go into the next new year feeling the same. Switch Instagram for Headspace – a meditation app – and give yourself the gift of disconnecting at least for a few minutes every day. Not only will you feel more productive, healing your mind will in turn lead to healing the body. Now, if only there was a way to visualise those few extra pounds slowly melting off our hips....
